Communicating Science
Translating evidence into action
One of the most common misconceptions about science communication is that its aim is simply to fill a knowledge void. To share vital information that, once known, will change the way its recipient thinks or acts. On the surface, this seems logical. It’s easy to think that if we had all the ”right“ information, we would do all the “right” things. But human behaviour is rarely completely rational. Effective science communication practice must account for context – emotional, social, cultural, and environmental pressures, as well as many other factors that also influence decision making. In addition to this, the timing, framing, and method of delivery will all affect the way a message is received, understood, and acted upon.
The Knowledge-to-Action framework
Rather than “science communication”, our team engages in what is commonly termed “knowledge translation”. This terminology emphasises that science in the academic sense is not the only type of knowledge, and also that our role is not simply to communicate knowledge, but to promote the translation of that knowledge into sustainable action. Our team’s knowledge translation work is based on the Knowledge-to-Action framework developed by Dr. Ian Graham and colleagues.1
The framework shows the two main components of evidence-based knowledge translation: a knowledge creation phase for scientific inquiry and evidence synthesis, and an action cycle during which scientific knowledge is adapted for implementation in a particular context. This is a transdisciplinary process, characterised by iterative refinement and respectful dialogue, during which the steps of the action cycle may flow in either direction.

Communicating with, not to: the importance of citizen engagement
Community deliberation serves as a powerful tool for transformative learning to occur, by creating safe spaces for dialogue, allowing participants to challenge existing beliefs, hear diverse perspectives, and critically reflect on their own assumptions, values, and worldviews. Engaging with a diverse range of community members throughout the knowledge translation process encourages participants to envision positive futures and work together to co-create intervention strategies that align with their values and lived experiences.
Our practice incorporates a number of additional frameworks which we have found effective for supporting long-term impact. Complexity theory provides an effective lens through which to understand many of today’s societal challenges, and this is complemented by a strengths-based approach that shifts the focus from problems to possibilities. Transdisciplinarity and deliberation
Rather than arising from or adhering to a single academic discipline, a transdisciplinary approach to science reaches across traditional boundaries to connect perspectives from a range of different knowledge systems. Public engagement and deliberation forms an important part of this approach.

Communicating complexity
The Cynefin framework helps audiences recognise when issues are complex, uncertain, and not amenable to simple solutions. By encouraging adaptive thinking, collaborative sense-making, and iterative learning, it supports evidence-informed decision-making that reflects the dynamic nature of real-world challenges.

Transformative learning for long-term change
How can a “disorienting dilemma” prompt critical reflection, dialogue, and shifts in deeply held assumptions? Discover how we facilitate this process by fostering inclusive, evidence-informed discussions that support shared understanding, collective decision-making, and sustained social impact.

Identifying strengths and opportunities
Meet Appreciative Inquiry, a strengths-based framework that supports science communication by engaging communities in identifying existing assets, shared values, and successful practices that can be strengthened through scientific evidence.

Message framing for maximum impact
A key tool for effective knowledge translation, framing connects scientific evidence with the experiences, priorities, and cultural values of communities. Choosing a suitable message frame enables people to understand not only what the evidence says but also why it matters in their own context.
